IBM said Tuesday that it will open its first research lab in Brazil, a new research laboratory in the largest Latin American country. The company said that the new lab will be integrated into its worldwide research and development organizations to enhance scientific discovery and apply the results to address the planet’s biggest challenges.
IBM Research – Brazil is IBM’s ninth global research lab and also IBM’s first research lab in South America. In addition, it is the the first new IBM Research lab in 12 years.
Research at the new lab will focus on smarter natural resource discovery, exploration and logistics as well as on smarter devices that can be created using advances in semiconductors aiming the challenges of building a smarter planet.
In addition, the lab is expected by the company to create and deploy innovations which will be used at the major sporting events which Brazil is expected to host, including the Soccer World Cup in 2014 and the Olympic Games in 2016.
