After briefly disappearing the Vaio T, Sony has added the thin and light laptops to the company’s Japanese web site again. But the models now feature Intel Consumer Ultra Low Voltage (CULV) processors including 1.2GHz Celeron SU2300, 1.4GHz Core 2 Duo SU9400, and 1.6GHz Core 2 Duo 9600 options. All three chips use the same Intel GMA 4500MHD graphics.
The notebooks are available with up to 8GB of RAM, and with hard drives up to 500GB of SSDs up to 512GB. You can also get pretty much any version of Windows 7.
In other words, despite the CULV processors, these new Sony Vaio T models don’t come cheap. They’re clearly not designed to compete with budget thin and light models from Asus, Acer, Lenovo, and other companies. In fact, the cheapest model goes for the equivalent of about $1400.
But you do get some premium options that you wouldn’t find on lower priced notebooks. For instance, Sony offers batteries that are good for 11 to 17 hours. The laptops have optical disc drives including optional Blu-Ray drives. And there are also optional TV tuner and fingerprint scanner options.

E-waste is a subject we cover a lot here – as much as we love the promotion of new green technology, we also try to stay aware of the fact one should be very responsible in how they dispose of old, less green-focused gear. Did you know you can apparently drop off computer e-waste for recycling with Goodwill? This is a very well intentioned program which the non-profit has been doing in conjunction with computer manufacturer Dell called Reconnect.
The Reconnect partnership, which recently added other another 445 e-waste collection sites across the United States to bring the total up to over 1,900, ”enables consumers to responsibly recycle any brand of unwanted computers or computer accessories at no cost.” Goodwill stores and drop off locations for charitable goods are where the no longer wanted computer equipment can be left “with Goodwill employees managing responsible computer disassembly and disposal.”
Reconnect, which kicked off in Dell’s Austin, Texas backyard five years ago, reportedly “has diverted more than 96 million pounds of e-waste from landfills and created more than 250 green jobs.” Those dropping off at one of the Reconnect locations receive a tax receipt, regardless of the brand and condition of the equipment. Equipment which is still usable will be resold, “and devices in need of repair will either be refurbished or broken down into parts to be recycled by Dell partners.” You need to make sure first though to wipe off all personal data from your computer’s hard drives before dropping them off.

Dell has released details about an updated Mini 10 Netbook. The unit is due out in January 2010 and will utilize the new Intel Atom N450 processor. According to Dell, the new, updated version of the Mini 10 Netbook will offer many new features. Some these features will include the new Atom 450 processor, support for Broadcom HD video processing, extended battery life, a new keyboard style, Wifi GPS, an HDTV turner, and built in surround sound speakers.
The new Netbook will go on sale in January directly from Dell and start out at $299. As with most computers, upgrades will probably increase the base price. Unlike current Netbook models offered by Dell, the new Mini 10 will be built more for greater support for video processing including HD video. While the N450 has the same speed as current Atom processor, it has newer features that can help produce improvements in processing abilities and even power saving aids due to its smaller die cast size.
One of the biggest additions to the new Mini 10 model will be Broadcom’s Crystal Clear HD video processing unit. This multimedia upgrade should be a major shot in the current lineup of Netbooks offered by Dell. Many Netbooks, including Dell’s units, have difficulty in playing videos downloaded or streamed from the Internet.

Leading information technology service provider Fujitsu is set to produce and distribute over one million new contactless smart cards in London.
The new Freedom passes combine Oyster and ITSO smart card technology and will include a photograph of the owner, which will eliminate the need for people to carry a separate photocard.
More than one million people over the age of 60 will be able to use the pass to receive free travel on buses, trains, the London Underground and the Docklands Light Railway in the capital, as well as local bus routes around the country.
The passes have been paid for by London boroughs for over 20 years, but the new-style cards will have an added level of security and will be valid for a period of five years, three years longer than the current pass.
Fujitsu will issue one million blank Freedom passes, which will then be encoded and personalised for new or renewing customers.
People who use the pass say that it makes a big difference to their independence.
